George Osborne has slapped in a descending course the Defence Secretary Liam Fox in a row over the funding of Britain’s nuclear deterrent.
The Chancellor risked a damaging Cabinet division on defence by insisting that the Ministry of Defence must pay notwithstanding the full cost of replacing Britain’s Trident nuclear weapon body estimated at more than Ј20 billion.
Defence sources have warned that the decision could lead to Britain’s nuclear deterrent being downgraded.
